Contact us quickly
It's very important that you contact us as soon as you think there might be the slightest possibility of needing to make a claim on your policy.
This is for two reasons:
- Getting the insurer involved in the early stages of a claim can often prevent a situation escalating out of control.
- Ideally, it's best to settle a dispute before the lawyers get involved.
Early warning
You need to let us know as soon as you're aware of:
- Any shortcoming in your work for a client likely to lead to a claim against you. Even criticism of your work which you consider is unjustified could give rise to a claim;
- Any claim or threat of a claim against you;
- Any complaint about your work or a refusal by one of your clients to pay an amount owed to you;
- Any reasonable grounds for suspicion you may have that a partner, director, employee or self-employed freelancer has acted dishonestly.
Don't try to fix it alone
You also need to be aware that it's very important that you don't try to settle a claim on your own - you need the underwriter's approval.
Unless you've already had to reveal that you have professional indemnity insurance to a client for contractural reasons, it's important that you don't reveal that you have PI cover if a claim is made against you.
