General queries
Do I have to pay VAT on my business insurance?
No - you pay Insurance Premium Tax instead. The current rate for this is 6% and it's included in all our quotes.
What types of insurance are compulsory for self employed consultants?
To a certain extent that depends on your profession and the requirements of any relevant governing bodies. (For example, chartered accountants are required to have professional indemnity insurance, as are surveyors who are members of RICS.)
The only other insurance you might legally be required to have is employers' liability. This is generally only for those businesses that have employees but there are some exemptions. If you're not sure you need it, feel free to get in touch with one of the team on 0845 872 5090.
I'd like to recommend a friend. Do you have a process in place?
Yes we do (and thank you for thinking of us, by the way). There's a really simple form for you to complete and that's it - we'll do the rest.
What insurances can you arrange?
Our focus is on commercial insurance rather than domestic insurance so we can't insure your car or your house.
We offer a wide range of insurance for professional people: professional indemnity, public liability, employers' liability, office and general business insurance, management liability, trustees liability, personal accident, digital risks and cover for commercial legal expenses.
We've made it really easy to get a quote, and buy, most of these policies online. Feel free to give us a call on 0845 872 5090 if you'd prefer to talk to someone about your insurance needs instead.
About buying online
Does the professional indemnity cover I buy online cover me worldwide?
That depends on what you do and who underwrites your insurance.
Some occupations are covered for work in the EU; some are covered worldwide. So, you may have some geographical limitations, but these will be stated in the policy wording that's included with your quote.
If you need cover in different territories to those stated, please get in touch with one of the team on 0845 872 5090.
I can't buy for my profession online. Can I get a quote over the phone?
Yes, no problem. If you're stuck, just give the team a call on 0845 872 5090.
If you can't see your profession on our website, it might mean we need to have a little chat about what you do. If needs be, we'll approach some other insurers to get a quote from them instead.
Again, just give us a call on 0845 872 5090 and we'll take it from there.
I'm a broker, can I complete online on behalf of a client?
Unfortunately not - we're unable to offer wholesale policies online.
Who provides the insurance that I would buy online?
It depends on what you do. It's either going to be Hiscox or W.R. Berkley. Both are specialist and reliable and you'll be in safe hands.
How do I buy through your website?
It's really easy. Just click on the type of insurance you'd like and then hit the big green 'Get a quote' button.
You'll need to spend a couple of minutes telling us about you and what you do but, once that's done, you can buy your policy there and then and download your policy documents straightaway.
Which payment methods can I use?
Depending on the insurer, our online policies can paid be by monthly or annual interest-free Direct Debit, or by credit or debit card.
Policies from other insurers and those not arranged on our website can be paid by credit or debit card, BACS, cheque or through an instalment plan from by a third-party credit provider called Premium Credit.
I am having trouble buying online, what should I do?
Your best bet is to give the team a call on 0845 872 5090. If you're stuck, we'll be able to point you in the right direction or go through a quote with you over the 'phone instead.
Managing your insurance policy

Depending on the insurer, you may be entitled to a pro rata refund but please be aware that some insurers reserve the right to retain some or all of the premium you've paid.
How do I get copies of my insurance documents?

Renewing your policy
My policy is continuous. Will I have to renew each year?
No, the policy will simply roll over at each anniversary - you don't have to do anything.
We'll send your policy documents to you a few days before this happens too, just to confirm everything's gone through as it should.
My policy is an annual policy. Will you contact me at renewal next year?
Yes. We'll be in touch at least four weeks before your renewal date to start the process off.
Making a claim on your insurance policy
How do I make a claim through PolicyBee?
If you need help straightaway then it's best to call us on 0845 872 5090 and talk to one of the team.
If you prefer, complete this claims form and we'll get the ball rolling from there.
How long will the claims process take?
That depends what the claim is for.
Professional indemnity claims can sometimes take months to resolve whereas a claim for a broken laptop can take just a few days.
Rest assured, we take all claims seriously and we'll do everything we can to make sure that yours is processed as quickly as possible. You'll have access to your own adviser throughout the process and they'll be available to guide you through the whole thing
If I make a claim, will it affect me at renewal?
It's possible, yes.
It depends on what the claim was for, whether the insurer paid out and, if they did, how much they paid.
Each claim is assessed on its own merits so there's no hard and fast rule.
The service was quick, efficient and very professional. I would recommend using this service.
