Professional photographers associations… are they worth their weight in fancy lenses or as useful as a cheap disposable?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here are just a few of the many advantages of joining one. It goes without saying, as with anything like this, that you get out what you put in. The more active a member you can be, and the more you take advantage of any benefits, the more value it will add to your photography business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And we’ve included a list of photographers’ associations for you to peruse. So here goes…<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Professional by association<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There’s no ‘one reason’ to join up. Each association has its own agenda and reasons for existing. And you’ll have your own ideas about what you want to gain from it too. Whether you’re very experienced or just starting out, there are loads of ways a membership can help you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Networking opportunities are a major benefit. Being a member of a professional photographers association allows you and others who work on their own or in smaller set-ups, to have a collective voice and support each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you enjoy bouncing ideas off of other creatives and taking inspiration from like-minded photographers, it could be a really uplifting experience to be part of an artistic community. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other benefits include access to training days, being kept up-to-date with developments in the industry, plus money off products and services. All of which add value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another positive to being a member of a photography association is that it makes you look professional. And helps differentiate you from other photographers. Long and the short of it, it could help get you more work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Professional photographers associations in the UK<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If you’re thinking about signing up to an association, here’s a taster of what’s out there. Which one’s right for you will depend on the kind of photography you do, what you want to gain from membership, and how much you want to spend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For all photographers<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Association of Photographers (AOP)<\/a> – benefits include product discounts, access to business forms and templates, discussion forums, courses, and much more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

British Institute of Professional Photographers (BIPP)<\/a> – one of the most respected professional associations in the industry. They offer access to qualifications and competitions. You’ll also receive trade discounts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Guild of Photographers<\/a> – for all manner of photographers. A paid membership gets you good discounts, training and development opportunities, and entry to competitions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

National Photographic Society (NPS)<\/a> – NPS offer website hosting, a business listing, and the chance to gain a recognised qualification. You can also get trade discounts, access to forums, and training days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Professional Photographers Association of Northern Ireland (PPANI)<\/a> – For photographers in Northern Ireland only. Benefits include a members page on the website, networking opportunities, and regular seminars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Royal Photographic Society (RPS)<\/a> – you’ll get sent the award-winning RPS Journal, as well as monthly newsletters. Access to qualifications, online courses, events, and discounted workshops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For specialist photographers<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Association for Historical and Fine Art Photography (AHFAP) <\/a> – for photographers working in the cultural heritage sector. A paid membership offers access to forums, job listings, and portfolio reviews.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

British Press Photographers\u2019 Association (BPPA)<\/a> – for photographers working full-time in the British news media. Membership gives you your own page on their website. You’ll also get discounts, access to forums, and entry to exhibitions and competitions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Professional Garden Photographers\u2019 Association (PGPA)<\/a> – for specialist plant and garden photographers. Paying for membership will give you a page on their website. They also offer excellent networking opportunities, online workshops, and access to RHS shows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Society of Wedding & Portrait Photographers (SWPP)<\/a> – another paid membership, you’ll have access to a mentoring programme and be given a website listing. They offer discounts, access to webinars, and a monthly competition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All the associations listed here cost money to join, but there are lots of free forums and websites out there too. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
