And between March 2024 and January 2025, another <a href=\"https:\/\/register-of-charities.charitycommission.gov.uk\/en\/sector-data\/sector-overview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">668<\/a> charities were registered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the total number of charities in the UK is unknown, since only not-for-profits with a gross annual income of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/setting-up-charity\/register-your-charity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u00a35,000 or more<\/a> have to register.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s difficult to know exactly how many extra, unregistered charities there are. But it\u2019s estimated there are between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.civilsociety.co.uk\/voices\/there-are-more-than-twice-as-many-charities-in-the-uk-as-you-ve-been-told.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">80,000 and 100,000<\/a> across England and Wales.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Plus, as many as<a href=\"https:\/\/howcharitieswork.com\/about-charities\/how-many-charities\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> 20,000 organisations<\/a> that aren&#8217;t generally regarded as charities also have charitable status \u2013 like private schools, churches, and museums.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The last few years have been a bumpy road for many charities. Especially small and micro charities. Rising costs, more demand for their services, and dwindling donor numbers have led to many of these important not-for-profits closing their doors in 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This article looks in-depth at UK charity statistics and the state of the sector in 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">UK charity sector statistics &amp; key facts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><em>All figures are the most up-to-date available at the time of publishing.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The UK had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/283464\/number-of-uk-charities-in-england-and-wales\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">170,171<\/a> registered charities in June 2024. At least another <a href=\"https:\/\/howcharitieswork.com\/about-charities\/how-many-charities\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">20,000<\/a> not-for-profit organisations have charitable status but don\u2019t feature on the register.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Charity Commission received <a href=\"https:\/\/assets.publishing.service.gov.uk\/media\/6697c6e549b9c0597fdafec3\/Charity_Commission_Annual_Report_and_Accounts_170724.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">9,008 <\/a>applications to register a charity in 2023\/24, 54% of which were successful. In the same period, 3,885 charities were removed from the register.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The total income of registered charities in 2023\/24 was \u00a396bn.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In the same period, charities spent \u00a394bn.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The voluntary sector contributed approximately <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncvo.org.uk\/news-and-insights\/news-index\/uk-civil-society-almanac-2023\/executive-summary\/#the-voluntary-sector-contributes-about-20bn-to-the-uks-gdp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u00a318bn<\/a> to the UK\u2019s economy in 2020\/21, or 0.8% of GDP.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Micro charities and small charities (defined by an income less than \u00a310,000, and \u00a310,000 to \u00a3100,000 respectively) make up <a href=\"https:\/\/register-of-charities.charitycommission.gov.uk\/en\/sector-data\/charities-by-income-band\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">over 80%<\/a> of the sector.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Conversely, major and super-major organisations (income over \u00a310 million) make up less than 1%.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Social services is the largest voluntary subsector, accounting for around a fifth of organisations. It also contributes the most to the UK\u2019s economy, at around <a href=\"https:\/\/lordslibrary.parliament.uk\/voluntary-and-community-sector-contribution-to-society\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u00a33.4bn<\/a> per year.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How much do charities make in a year?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2023\/24, the total income of charities registered in the UK was <a href=\"https:\/\/assets.publishing.service.gov.uk\/media\/6697c6e549b9c0597fdafec3\/Charity_Commission_Annual_Report_and_Accounts_170724.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u00a396bn<\/a> (up from \u00a388bn in 2022\/23). From January 2025, this figure stands at <a href=\"https:\/\/register-of-charities.charitycommission.gov.uk\/en\/sector-data\/sector-overview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">over \u00a3100bn<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The voluntary sector contributes around <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncvo.org.uk\/news-and-insights\/news-index\/why-investing-in-volunteering-is-money-well-spent\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u00a318bn<\/a> to the UK economy each year. Account for its social impact and the value of charitable donations in the statistics, however, and it\u2019s worth much more \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/benefactgroup.com\/press-release\/charitable-giving-adds-23-billion-to-uk-economy-benefact-group-launches-inaugural-value-of-giving-report\/#:~:text=The%20research%2C%20commissioned%20by%20Benefact%20Group%20and%20conducted,%C2%A318.7bn%2C%20with%20charitable%20donations%20contributing%20an%20additional%20%C2%A34.3bn.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u00a323bn<\/a>, according to one report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The amount of money charities make has increased overall when compared with recent years (though never quite reaching pre-pandemic levels). Charity donations statistics in the UK show that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/380046\/charitable-giving-england\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">people are giving more generously<\/a>, with regular donations up by <a href=\"https:\/\/woodfortrees.net\/state-of-the-sector-report-2024-request\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">3%<\/a> in 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the gap between charity income and spending narrowing slightly, total charity spending remained high in 2024, at \u00a394 billion (\u00a385 billion in 2022\/23).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The UK&#8217;s biggest charities<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The UK&#8217;s largest charities (AKA organisations with incomes over \u00a310m) make up <a href=\"https:\/\/register-of-charities.charitycommission.gov.uk\/en\/sector-data\/charities-by-income-band\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">less than 1%<\/a> of the charity sector. Yet despite being low in number, they account for over 66% of all charity spending.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/register-of-charities.charitycommission.gov.uk\/en\/sector-data\/top-10-charities\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">largest charities in the UK<\/a> (by income) in 2025:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Nuffield Health (1.36bn)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Save the Children International (1.22bn)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Charities Aid Foundation (1.15bn)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The British Council (\u00a3873m)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Arts Council of England (\u00a3803m)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>United Learning Ltd (\u00a3735m)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The National Trust (\u00a3723m)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cancer Research UK (\u00a3684m)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cardiff University (\u00a3636m)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lloyd\u2019s Register Foundation (\u00a3560m)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>A dive into the statistics on the <a href=\"https:\/\/register-of-charities.charitycommission.gov.uk\/en\/sector-data\/top-10-charities\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">income and spending of the UK\u2019s biggest charities<\/a> show that most of their money comes from a mixture of donations, legacies and\/or <a href=\"https:\/\/howcharitieswork.com\/transparency-and-accountability\/charitable-activity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">charitable activities<\/a>, and is largely spent on fundraising and charitable activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The most popular UK charities<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Interestingly, a charity\u2019s income doesn\u2019t necessarily reflect its popularity (AKA how many people have a good opinion of it) in the statistics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A YouGov poll revealed the <a href=\"https:\/\/yougov.co.uk\/ratings\/politics\/popularity\/charities-organisations\/all\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">UK\u2019s most popular charities<\/a> in 2025:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Macmillan Cancer Support (89%)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>St. John Ambulance (87%)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>British Heart Foundation (85%)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Samaritans (85%)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cancer Research UK (81%)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Alzheimer\u2019s Research UK (79%)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>RNLI Lifeboats (78%)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>British Red Cross (77%)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Prostate Cancer UK (77%)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Marie Curie (75%)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>According to these results, adults in the UK think positively of a range of different charities, but particularly ones carrying out research into serious and life-changing conditions like cancer and Alzheimer\u2019s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Analysing the popularity rankings across different generations reveals some interesting trends, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/yougov.co.uk\/ratings\/politics\/popularity\/charities-organisations\/millennials\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Millennials<\/a> are more likely to support animal charities (eg Dogs Trust) and environment-focused initiatives (eg Keep Britain Tidy). Meanwhile, mental health (eg Samaritans) and children\u2019s charities (eg Children in Need and Great Ormond Street Hospital) rank highly among both <a href=\"https:\/\/yougov.co.uk\/ratings\/politics\/popularity\/charities-organisations\/generationx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Gen X<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/yougov.co.uk\/ratings\/politics\/popularity\/charities-organisations\/babyboomers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Baby Boomers<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The most common small charity causes in the UK<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are lots of different ways to interpret the UK\u2019s \u2018most common\u2019 charity causes. Here, we mean the charitable causes represented by the largest number of small voluntary organisations (income less than \u00a3100k).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Small charities make up over 80% of the UK&#8217;s charity sector. And so their impact on local communities is huge. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to UK small charity statistics gathered by the National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncvo.org.uk\/news-and-insights\/news-index\/uk-civil-society-almanac-2024\/executive-summary\/\">the most common small charity causes<\/a> in 2020\/21 were:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Social services (19% of organisations)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cultural and recreational services (15%)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Religion (10%)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Grant-making foundations (7%)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Parent-teacher associations (7%).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Village halls, youth clubs, and scout groups also featured further down the list. They made up a combined 9% of voluntary organisations in the UK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Statistics &amp; key facts about the UK charity workforce<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Recent statistics from the Charity Commission show that <a href=\"https:\/\/register-of-charities.charitycommission.gov.uk\/en\/sector-data\/sector-overview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1,281,583<\/a> people were employed by a charity in January 2025.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There were also over <a href=\"https:\/\/assets.publishing.service.gov.uk\/media\/6697c6e549b9c0597fdafec3\/Charity_Commission_Annual_Report_and_Accounts_170724.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">924,000<\/a> trustee positions at registered charities in the UK and 6,673,540 volunteers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Figures gathered by the UK Civil Society show that around <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncvo.org.uk\/news-and-insights\/news-index\/uk-civil-society-almanac-2024\/executive-summary\/#workforce-a-slight-decline-overall-but-growth-in-hybrid-working\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">978,000<\/a> people were working in the voluntary sector in 2024. That\u2019s about 3% of the UK\u2019s workforce.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In December 2023, more than half (53%) of voluntary sector employees worked for small charities (1-49 employees). Of those, a quarter (25%) worked for micro charities (1-10 employees).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In 2024, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/283441\/united-kingdom-uk-charities-with-most-employees\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">UK\u2019s biggest charity employers<\/a> were Save The Children (19,548 employees) and Nuffield Health (18,215 employees).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Between 2011 and 2024, the voluntary sector workforce has grown by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncvo.org.uk\/news-and-insights\/news-index\/uk-civil-society-almanac-2024\/executive-summary\/#workforce-a-slight-decline-overall-but-growth-in-hybrid-working\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">30%<\/a>. Unfortunately, it\u2019s also slightly shrunk since 2023, despite steadily growing in the past.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>84% of charity workers are based in England, which is equal to the country\u2019s share of the UK population. This is followed by Scotland at 10%, Wales at 3%, and Northern Ireland at 2%.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In England, 42% of the voluntary sector workforce is based in London and the south.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Four in ten volunteers work remotely or in hybrid roles. This accounts for about 39% of the UK\u2019s volunteer workforce.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Women are more likely than men to work for charities. They make up <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncvo.org.uk\/news-and-insights\/news-index\/uk-civil-society-almanac-2024\/workforce\/who-works-in-the-voluntary-sector\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">68%<\/a> of the workforce.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncvo.org.uk\/news-and-insights\/news-index\/uk-civil-society-almanac-2024\/executive-summary\/#workforce-a-slight-decline-overall-but-growth-in-hybrid-working\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">39%<\/a> of people employed in the voluntary sector are social workers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncvo.org.uk\/news-and-insights\/news-index\/uk-civil-society-almanac-2024\/executive-summary\/#geographical-distribution-london-and-the-south-dominate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">geographical breakdown of the voluntary sector workforce<\/a> across the UK in 2024 is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>East \u2013 17%<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>London \u2013 16%<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Scotland \u2013 10%<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>South West \u2013 9%<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>East of England \u2013 9%<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>North West \u2013 8%<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>West Midlands \u2013 8%<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Yorkshire and the Humber \u2013 8%<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>East Midlands \u2013 6%<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Wales \u2013 3%<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>North East \u2013 3%<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Northern Ireland \u2013 2%<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Where are UK charities based?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Of the <a href=\"https:\/\/assets.publishing.service.gov.uk\/media\/6697c6e549b9c0597fdafec3\/Charity_Commission_Annual_Report_and_Accounts_170724.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">170,056 charities registered in the UK<\/a> in 2024, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncvo.org.uk\/news-and-insights\/news-index\/uk-civil-society-almanac-2023\/executive-summary\/#\/just-under-a-fifth-of-voluntary-sector-organisations-work-in-social-services\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">geographical breakdown<\/a> was as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>80% in England<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>12% in Scotland<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>4% in Wales<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>4% in Northern Ireland<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Scotland had the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncvo.org.uk\/news-and-insights\/news-index\/uk-civil-society-almanac-2023\/profile\/where-are-voluntary-organisations-based\/#:~:text=In%20England%2C%2081%2C968%20(63%25),%2C%20Yorkshire%20and%20the%20Humber).\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">highest number of registered smaller charities<\/a> per 1,000 people in the population at 3.6. Wales had the lowest at 2.3 per 1,000 people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the latest UK charity sector statistics, larger charity organisations are more likely to be active nationally and internationally. Whereas smaller ones operate locally, often within the county or area they are based.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most of the UK\u2019s biggest voluntary organisations are based in London and the south.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mind the digital gap<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Having seen a period of huge digital acceleration, shifts in working models, and the streamlining of operations post-pandemic, UK charities have had to invest heavily in their services to keep up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Digital growth is a huge benefit for charities, allowing them to effectively analyse data and communicate with their audiences in new ways. In 2025, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.charitylink.net\/blog\/whats-ahead-for-charities-and-fundraising-in-2024#:~:text=Overall%2C%20the%20future%20of%20charities%20in%202024%20%28and,and%20the%20need%20for%20stronger%20relationships%20with%20supporters.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">blockchain technology<\/a> could be one of the strategies charities increasingly develop to consolidate support among their donors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet despite small charities making up over <a href=\"https:\/\/register-of-charities.charitycommission.gov.uk\/en\/sector-data\/charities-by-income-band\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">80%<\/a> of the UK\u2019s charity sector, investment is significantly higher among larger organisations. <a href=\"https:\/\/charitydigitalskills.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">72%<\/a> of small charities cited squeezed finances as the reason they\u2019re struggling digitally in 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recent statistics on charity spending show that large charities (income of \u00a31m or more) have more money to spend on pioneering tech solutions and fundraising strategies. And that <a href=\"https:\/\/charitydigitalskills.co.uk\/report\/detailed-findings\/charity-digital-trends\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">36%<\/a> of small charities have an advanced digital strategy compared to 74% of large charities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Generously protected<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Charities of all shapes and sizes need specialist insurance to protect them from risk. Just because you\u2019re doing something good doesn\u2019t mean others won\u2019t point the finger of blame if something goes wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What kind of cover suits any organisation best will depend on whether they&#8217;re a charity, club, or community group.
