Demand is growing.&nbsp;Trustees are&nbsp;getting&nbsp;harder to recruit. And many charities are asked to do more, with less&#8230;leaving them with less time and resources to&nbsp;properly assess&nbsp;their risks.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So,&nbsp;what does the UK charity sector actually look like in 2026?&nbsp;And what does that&nbsp;mean&nbsp;for the&nbsp;good work&nbsp;that charities do?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Want to know more about which types of insurance will benefit your organisation the most? Take a good look round our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.policybee.co.uk\/charity-insurance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">charity and not-for-profit insurance hub<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How many charities are there in the UK?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The&nbsp;UK\u2019s&nbsp;charity sector is huge.&nbsp;And&nbsp;it\u2019s&nbsp;growing every day.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to&nbsp;the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/register-of-charities.charitycommission.gov.uk\/en\/sector-data\/sector-overview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Charity Commission\u2019s&nbsp;online sector review<\/a>, which is updated&nbsp;daily,&nbsp;there are approximately:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>171,400 registered charities&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>13,805&nbsp;linked charities&nbsp;(AKA&nbsp;charities that&nbsp;share trustees or structures with another&nbsp;organisation)&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>185,293&nbsp;registered charities&nbsp;<strong>in total&nbsp;<\/strong>in the UK.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, this is&nbsp;likely just&nbsp;a small part&nbsp;of a much larger picture.&nbsp;The true size of the UK charity sector is unknown.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Only not-for-profits with a gross annual income of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/setting-up-charity\/register-your-charity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u00a35,000 or more<\/a>&nbsp;are required&nbsp;to&nbsp;register&nbsp;with the Charity Commission. Meaning there are plenty more small, unregistered groups quietly supporting their communities year-on-year \u2013 from volunteer-run food projects to local sports clubs and faith groups. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Plus, there may be as many as<a href=\"https:\/\/howcharitieswork.com\/about-charities\/how-many-charities\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&nbsp;20,000 organisations<\/a>&nbsp;that&nbsp;aren&#8217;t&nbsp;generally regarded&nbsp;as&nbsp;charities&nbsp;that also have charitable status \u2013 like private schools, churches, and museums.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What does this say about the current state of the UK charity sector?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">2025 saw a&nbsp;small but&nbsp;steady&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/charity-commission-casework-and-registrations-data-2024-to-2025\/casework-and-registrations-data-april-to-june-2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">increase in the number of charities applying for registration&nbsp;compared to 2024.<\/a>&nbsp;With&nbsp;9,836 applications&nbsp;made (and&nbsp;9,008 in 2024). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the same time,&nbsp;the&nbsp;number of&nbsp;charity closures&nbsp;also&nbsp;increased:&nbsp;4,233&nbsp;charities&nbsp;left&nbsp;the&nbsp;Charity Commission\u2019s&nbsp;register in 2025&nbsp;(compared to 3,885 in 2024).&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However,&nbsp;new charities&nbsp;are&nbsp;forming&nbsp;all the&nbsp;time&nbsp;and&nbsp;their&nbsp;income&nbsp;is&nbsp;rising&nbsp;year-by-year \u2013&nbsp;with a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/salocin-group.com\/downloads\/reports\/state-of-the-sector-annual-report-2026.pdf?utm_medium=email&amp;_hsenc=p2ANqtz-9TwilJlfJtWHt4wles1srVzuyZx2NQ1s5Ma9vryXrWTotbcx_mhe-iRFXinOAXnMBL9x0ecwSp8Ut1QenO_rZqjuJk1IDrje2ntZDPeVdLqzznt28&amp;_hsmi=84967234&amp;utm_content=84967234&amp;utm_source=hs_automation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">10%&nbsp;rise in overall charity sector&nbsp;income<\/a>&nbsp;in&nbsp;2025.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That tells us something important:&nbsp;that the charity sector is still growing in the UK. And&nbsp;that communities still step up where there&#8217;s a need.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">UK charity sector statistics &amp; key facts:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>As of May 2026, the&nbsp;UK has&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/register-of-charities.charitycommission.gov.uk\/en\/sector-data\/sector-overview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">171,387<\/a>&nbsp;registered charities. And a&nbsp;charity sector&nbsp;made&nbsp;up of&nbsp;1,717,635 employees, 6,537,728 volunteers, and 921,512 trustees.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Charity Commission received&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/charity-commission-annual-report-and-accounts-2024-to-2025\/charity-commission-annual-report-and-accounts-2024-to-2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">9,836&nbsp;charity&nbsp;<\/a>applications&nbsp;in 2024\/25.&nbsp;At the same&nbsp;time,&nbsp;4,233&nbsp;charities were removed from their register.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/assets.publishing.service.gov.uk\/media\/686bbf1781dd8f70f5de3be3\/Annual_Report_2024-25.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">total income of registered charities<\/a>&nbsp;in 2024\/25&nbsp;was \u00a3102bn, while&nbsp;total charity spending came in at \u00a3101bn.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Micro charities and small charities (defined by an income less than \u00a310,000, and \u00a310,000 to \u00a3100,000 respectively)&nbsp;make up&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/register-of-charities.charitycommission.gov.uk\/en\/sector-data\/charities-by-income-band\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">around three-quarters<\/a>&nbsp;of the&nbsp;UK charity&nbsp;sector.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In contrast,&nbsp;major&nbsp;and super-major&nbsp;organisations&nbsp;(income over \u00a310 million) make up less than 1%.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The voluntary sector alone contributed approximately&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncvo.org.uk\/news-and-insights\/news-index\/uk-civil-society-almanac-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u00a369.1bn<\/a>&nbsp;to the UK economy in 2021\/22.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Social services&nbsp;make up&nbsp;the&nbsp;UK\u2019s&nbsp;largest voluntary subsector, accounting for around a fifth&nbsp;(19%)&nbsp;of&nbsp;all&nbsp;organisations&nbsp;and almost a quarter (23%) of total charity income. The subsector also contributes the most to the UK\u2019s economy \u2013 around&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/lordslibrary.parliament.uk\/voluntary-and-community-sector-contribution-to-society\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u00a33.4bn<\/a>&nbsp;per year.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"611\" src=\"https:\/\/www.policybee.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/STAT-1-UK-charity-stats-2026.png\" alt=\"UK charity statistics show that small and micro charities make up roughly three-quarters of the UK charity sector\" class=\"wp-image-27894\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.policybee.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/STAT-1-UK-charity-stats-2026.png 600w, https:\/\/www.policybee.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/STAT-1-UK-charity-stats-2026-147x150.png 147w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How much income do UK charities make?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2024\/25, the total income of UK-registered charities was&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/assets.publishing.service.gov.uk\/media\/686bbf1781dd8f70f5de3be3\/Annual_Report_2024-25.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u00a3102bn<\/a>&nbsp;(up from \u00a396bn in 2023\/24).&nbsp;In May 2026,&nbsp;however,&nbsp;this figure&nbsp;is closer to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/register-of-charities.charitycommission.gov.uk\/en\/sector-data\/sector-overview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u00a3107bn<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncvo.org.uk\/news-and-insights\/news-index\/uk-civil-society-almanac-2024\/financials\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">According to the UK Civil Society, volunteer organisations contribute around \u00a369.1bn<\/a>&nbsp;to&nbsp;the UK economy each year, accounting&nbsp;for almost half (46%) of all charity income.&nbsp;Around one fifth of this income (21%) is made up of public donations. Then government grants (8%) and funding from other organisations (7%).  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Behind these numbers are thousands of carefully balanced budgets, thoughtful funding decisions, and people trying to make resources stretch as far as possible. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As economic uncertainties persist, balancing&nbsp;income with spending&nbsp;is&nbsp;as&nbsp;important for charities&nbsp;as&nbsp;ever.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite&nbsp;the gap between charity income and spending&nbsp;narrowing&nbsp;slightly, total&nbsp;spending remained high in 2025&nbsp;at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/assets.publishing.service.gov.uk\/media\/686bbf1781dd8f70f5de3be3\/Annual_Report_2024-25.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u00a3101&nbsp;billion<\/a>&nbsp;(up&nbsp;from&nbsp;\u00a394 billion in 2024).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Margins remain tight,&nbsp;however,&nbsp;especially for smaller&nbsp;organisations. Many&nbsp;charities&nbsp;are finding&nbsp;they&nbsp;have to&nbsp;spend around&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncvo.org.uk\/news-and-insights\/news-index\/uk-civil-society-almanac-2024\/financials\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">95% of their income<\/a>&nbsp;to&nbsp;keep&nbsp;doing the good work they do.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The UK&#8217;s biggest charities<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The UK&#8217;s&nbsp;biggest&nbsp;charities (with incomes over \u00a310m)&nbsp;represent&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/register-of-charities.charitycommission.gov.uk\/en\/sector-data\/charities-by-income-band\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">less than 1%<\/a>&nbsp;of the charity sector. Yet&nbsp;they do vital work&nbsp;\u2013&nbsp;making up&nbsp;around&nbsp;66% of all charity&nbsp;income.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/register-of-charities.charitycommission.gov.uk\/en\/sector-data\/top-10-charities\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">largest charities in the UK<\/a> (by income) in 2026:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Nuffield Health (1.45bn)&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Charities Aid Foundation (1.39bn)&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Save the Children International (1.1bn)&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The British Council (\u00a31bn)&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Arts Council of England (\u00a3843m)&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>United Learning Ltd (\u00a3786m)&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The National Trust (\u00a3766m)&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cancer Research UK (\u00a3735m)&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lloyd\u2019s Register Foundation (\u00a3692m)&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cardiff University (\u00a3635m)&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Charities as large as this often&nbsp;rely on large gifts from wealthy&nbsp;donors. And the&nbsp;good news is that people are giving more generously than ever.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/salocin-group.com\/downloads\/reports\/state-of-the-sector-annual-report-2026.pdf?utm_medium=email&amp;_hsenc=p2ANqtz-9TwilJlfJtWHt4wles1srVzuyZx2NQ1s5Ma9vryXrWTotbcx_mhe-iRFXinOAXnMBL9x0ecwSp8Ut1QenO_rZqjuJk1IDrje2ntZDPeVdLqzznt28&amp;_hsmi=84967234&amp;utm_content=84967234&amp;utm_source=hs_automation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">High-value giving&nbsp;increased by 21%<\/a>&nbsp;between&nbsp;2024-2025,&nbsp;with&nbsp;the&nbsp;average&nbsp;amount&nbsp;donated&nbsp;higher than&nbsp;it\u2019s&nbsp;ever been in the&nbsp;last five years.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The UK&#8217;s most popular charities<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When it comes to public&nbsp;support,&nbsp;a charity\u2019s&nbsp;income&nbsp;doesn\u2019t&nbsp;always tell the full story.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A YouGov poll revealed the <a href=\"https:\/\/yougov.co.uk\/ratings\/politics\/popularity\/charities-organisations\/all\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">UK\u2019s most popular charities<\/a> in 2026:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Macmillan Cancer Support (88%)&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cancer Research UK (85%)&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>St. John Ambulance (81%)&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>British Heart Foundation (81%)&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Samaritans (80%)&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Prostate Cancer UK (80%)&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>RNLI Lifeboats (79%)&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>WWF (79%)&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Great Ormond Street Hospital (78%)&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Alzheimer\u2019s&nbsp;Society&nbsp;(76%)&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>RSPCA&nbsp;(76%)&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Guide Dogs (76%)&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s clear that the UK public thinks positively of lot of different charities, but especially ones supporting the health and wellbeing of humans and animals. Or that fund research into serious and life-changing diseases like cancer and Alzheimer&#8217;s. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Overall,&nbsp;charities are seen well&nbsp;in the UK. According to the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/assets.publishing.service.gov.uk\/media\/686bbf1781dd8f70f5de3be3\/Annual_Report_2024-25.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Charity Commission\u2019s annual report<\/a>,&nbsp;70% of people believe the charities they&nbsp;donate to&nbsp;are making a real difference.&nbsp;And 66%&nbsp;think they&nbsp;operate&nbsp;to high ethical standards.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That support is hugely valuable and&nbsp;is&nbsp;something charities work hard to protect.&nbsp;Especially as&nbsp;reputational damage, data&nbsp;breaches&nbsp;or legal disputes can undermine it quickly if&nbsp;they\u2019re&nbsp;not prepared.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/www.policybee.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/STAT-2-UK-charity-stats-2026.png\" alt=\"UK charity statistics show that 70% of charitable donors believe that the charities they support make a difference\" class=\"wp-image-27895\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.policybee.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/STAT-2-UK-charity-stats-2026.png 600w, https:\/\/www.policybee.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/STAT-2-UK-charity-stats-2026-300x150.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What causes do small charities support?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Small&nbsp;and micro-charities&nbsp;(AKA whose income is below&nbsp;\u00a3100k)&nbsp;make&nbsp;up&nbsp;roughly&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/register-of-charities.charitycommission.gov.uk\/en\/sector-data\/charities-by-income-band\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">three quarters&nbsp;of the UK&#8217;s charity sector<\/a>.&nbsp;These&nbsp;organisations&nbsp;rely heavily on their volunteers. And&nbsp;their impact&nbsp;on local communities is huge.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to UK small charity statistics gathered by the National Council for Voluntary&nbsp;Organisations&nbsp;(NCVO),&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncvo.org.uk\/news-and-insights\/news-index\/uk-civil-society-almanac-2024\/executive-summary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the most common small&nbsp;charity causes<\/a>&nbsp;in 2021\/22&nbsp;were:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Social services (19% of organisations)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cultural and recreational services (15%)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Religion (10%)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Grant-making foundations (7%)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Parent-teacher associations (7%).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Village halls, youth clubs, and scout groups also featured further down the list. They made up a combined 12% of voluntary organisations in the UK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These&nbsp;small&nbsp;charities&nbsp;are&nbsp;often the&nbsp;first place&nbsp;people turn to when they need help.&nbsp;However, they also&nbsp;feel pressures more sharply than larger&nbsp;organisations&nbsp;\u2013 whether&nbsp;that\u2019s&nbsp;because of&nbsp;cash flow or compliance issues, cyber risks or&nbsp;problems resulting from&nbsp;their trustees\u2019 personal liabilities.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Recruitment in the UK charity sector<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Volunteering levels are&nbsp;still&nbsp;recovering after the&nbsp;pandemic years, and trustee recruitment&nbsp;remains&nbsp;a challenge.&nbsp;That means trustees and managers often carry a lot of responsibility.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some key facts about the UK charity workforce:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Statistics from the Charity Commission, from May 2025,&nbsp;show that&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/register-of-charities.charitycommission.gov.uk\/en\/sector-data\/sector-overview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1,717,635<\/a>&nbsp;people&nbsp;were&nbsp;employed by a charity.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There were also over&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/assets.publishing.service.gov.uk\/media\/6697c6e549b9c0597fdafec3\/Charity_Commission_Annual_Report_and_Accounts_170724.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">921,512<\/a>&nbsp;trustee positions at registered charities in the UK and 6,537,728&nbsp;volunteers&nbsp;\u2013&nbsp;a&nbsp;dip on previous years.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Figures gathered by the UK Civil Society show that around&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncvo.org.uk\/news-and-insights\/news-index\/uk-civil-society-almanac-2024\/executive-summary\/#workforce-a-slight-decline-overall-but-growth-in-hybrid-working\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">978,000<\/a>&nbsp;people&nbsp;were working in the voluntary sector in 2024.&nbsp;That\u2019s&nbsp;about 3% of the UK\u2019s workforce.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Between 2011 and 2024, the voluntary sector workforce&nbsp;grew&nbsp;by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncvo.org.uk\/news-and-insights\/news-index\/uk-civil-society-almanac-2024\/executive-summary\/#workforce-a-slight-decline-overall-but-growth-in-hybrid-working\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">30%<\/a>. Unfortunately,&nbsp;it\u2019s&nbsp;also slightly shrunk since 2023, despite steadily growing in the past.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>As of 2026, the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/register-of-charities.charitycommission.gov.uk\/en\/sector-data\/top-10-charities\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">UK\u2019s biggest charity employers<\/a>&nbsp;are&nbsp;Second Chance Headway Centre (484,577 employees) and Brixton House (65,170 employees).&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>More than half (53%)&nbsp;of&nbsp;voluntary sector employees&nbsp;work for smaller charities&nbsp;(AKA ones with&nbsp;fewer than 50 employees).&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>84% of charity workers are based in England, which is equal to the country\u2019s share of the UK population. This is followed by Scotland at 10%, Wales at 3%, and Northern Ireland at 2%.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In England, 41% of the voluntary sector workforce is based in London and the south.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Four in ten volunteers work remotely or in hybrid roles. This accounts for about 39% of the UK\u2019s volunteer workforce.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Women are more likely than men to work for charities. They make up&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncvo.org.uk\/news-and-insights\/news-index\/uk-civil-society-almanac-2024\/workforce\/who-works-in-the-voluntary-sector\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">68%<\/a>&nbsp;of the workforce.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncvo.org.uk\/news-and-insights\/news-index\/uk-civil-society-almanac-2024\/executive-summary\/#workforce-a-slight-decline-overall-but-growth-in-hybrid-working\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">39%<\/a>&nbsp;of&nbsp;people&nbsp;employed in the voluntary sector are social workers.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncvo.org.uk\/news-and-insights\/news-index\/uk-civil-society-almanac-2024\/executive-summary\/#geographical-distribution-london-and-the-south-dominate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">geographical breakdown of the voluntary sector workforce<\/a> across the UK in 2024 is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>East \u2013 17%<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>London \u2013 16%<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Scotland \u2013 10%<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>South West \u2013 9%<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>East of England \u2013 9%<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>North West \u2013 8%<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>West Midlands \u2013 8%<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Yorkshire and the Humber \u2013 8%<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>East Midlands \u2013 6%<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Wales \u2013 3%<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>North East \u2013 3%<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Northern Ireland \u2013 2%<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Where are UK charities based?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of the <a href=\"https:\/\/assets.publishing.service.gov.uk\/media\/6697c6e549b9c0597fdafec3\/Charity_Commission_Annual_Report_and_Accounts_170724.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">170,056 charities registered in the UK<\/a> in 2024, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncvo.org.uk\/news-and-insights\/news-index\/uk-civil-society-almanac-2023\/executive-summary\/#\/just-under-a-fifth-of-voluntary-sector-organisations-work-in-social-services\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">geographical breakdown<\/a> was:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>80% in England<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>12% in Scotland<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>4% in Wales<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>4% in Northern Ireland<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Scotland had the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncvo.org.uk\/news-and-insights\/news-index\/uk-civil-society-almanac-2023\/profile\/where-are-voluntary-organisations-based\/#:~:text=In%20England%2C%2081%2C968%20(63%25),%2C%20Yorkshire%20and%20the%20Humber).\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">highest number of registered smaller charities<\/a> per 1,000 people in the population at 3.6. Wales had the lowest at 2.3 per 1,000 people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the latest UK charity sector statistics, larger charity&nbsp;organisations&nbsp;are more likely to be active nationally and internationally.&nbsp;Most of these are based in London and the south.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Smaller charities tend to be local, often working within the country or area&nbsp;they\u2019re&nbsp;based. That local focus is powerful \u2013 but it also means risks are very real and personal.&nbsp;A slipped step&nbsp;at a fundraiser, a damaged laptop, a lost data file&#8230;these&nbsp;aren\u2019t&nbsp;abstract problems when you know the people involved.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mind the digital gap<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Having seen a period of huge digital acceleration, shifts in working models, and the streamlining of operations post-pandemic, many UK charities have had to invest heavily in&nbsp;their&nbsp;digital services.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s&nbsp;easy to take&nbsp;for granted that online fundraising, remote meetings and keeping digital records is the new normal for&nbsp;UK charities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the gap between large and small charities&nbsp;remains&nbsp;wide, especially when you&nbsp;consider that&nbsp;smaller charities are more likely to struggle to secure investment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/charitydigitalskills.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Charity-Digital-Skills-Report-2025.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">74% of charities say digital is a medium or high priority<\/a>&nbsp;for them. But while digital awareness among charities is&nbsp;higher&nbsp;than in previous years,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/charitydigitalskills.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Charity-Digital-Skills-Report-2025.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">68% of small charities are still at the early stages&nbsp;of their digital journey<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;just over a third (34%) say they are advancing with digital.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition,&nbsp;over a third (35%)&nbsp;of charities&nbsp;confess to being poor at&nbsp;online&nbsp;fundraising.&nbsp;And&nbsp;27% say they&nbsp;don\u2019t&nbsp;do any online fundraising at all&#8230;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the meantime, the&nbsp;charity&nbsp;sector faces many new and fast-evolving&nbsp;cyber&nbsp;risks.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">76% of charities now use AI tools.&nbsp;And with more data held online&nbsp;\u2013 including details about staff,&nbsp;volunteers&nbsp;and donors \u2013 understanding the rules around&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fundraisingregulator.org.uk\/about-fundraising\/resources\/data-privacy-and-fundraising\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">data privacy<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.policybee.co.uk\/blog\/how-charity-cyber-insurance-can-help-charities-fight-cybercrime\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">how to manage their cyber risks<\/a>&nbsp;is more important now than ever.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/charitydigitalskills.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Charity-Digital-Skills-Report-2025.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">69%&nbsp;of charities&nbsp;report strained finances<\/a>&nbsp;as&nbsp;the&nbsp;reason&nbsp;they\u2019ve&nbsp;been unable to&nbsp;progress digitally.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And&nbsp;just&nbsp;44% say they have a clear digital strategy&nbsp;to help them manage their cyber risks&nbsp;(compared to 50% in previous years).&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This may well&nbsp;start to&nbsp;change in&nbsp;the new future,&nbsp;however,&nbsp;with half (49%) of charities&nbsp;saying&nbsp;developing their strategy for digital, data, and AI&nbsp;is a priority&nbsp;for them.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"411\" src=\"https:\/\/www.policybee.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/STAT-3-UK-charity-stats-2026.png\" alt=\"Statistics showing the current state of digital strategy in the UK charity sector\" class=\"wp-image-27892\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.policybee.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/STAT-3-UK-charity-stats-2026.png 600w, https:\/\/www.policybee.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/STAT-3-UK-charity-stats-2026-219x150.png 219w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Generously protected<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Charities of all shapes and sizes need specialist insurance to protect them from risk. Just because you\u2019re doing something good doesn\u2019t mean others won\u2019t point the finger of blame if something goes wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What kind of cover suits any organisation best will depend on whether they&#8217;re a charity, club, or community group. Also, what their purpose is, including if they offer a service or advice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.policybee.co.uk\/public-liability-for-charities\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.policybee.co.uk\/public-liability-for-charities\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Public liability insurance<\/a> covers events, fundraisers, and meetings in case of injury to anyone attending or damage to property. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.policybee.co.uk\/charity-employers-liability-insurance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Employers\u2019 liability insurance for charities<\/a> is the only cover required legally and protects an organisation\u2019s staff and volunteers. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.policybee.co.uk\/trustee-indemnity-insurance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Trustees\u2019 insurance<\/a> protects trustees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.policybee.co.uk\/portable-equipment-insurance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Contents and portable equipment insurance<\/a> covers loss of or damage to kit, big or small.
