And it\u2019s rare to find someone running a business who relies solely on their own skillset, judgement and expertise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most people are open to ideas and advice \u2013 whether that comes from friends, family, business associates or paid consultants. And while that advice can lead to positive outcomes, it can also be disastrous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With that in mind, we surveyed more than 500 small and microbusiness owners to ask what the best and worst kind of business advice they ever received was, and what its impact was. Here\u2019s what we discovered\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"750\" height=\"983\" src=\"https:\/\/www.policybee.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Image-5-750.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-22537\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.policybee.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Image-5-750.jpg 750w, https:\/\/www.policybee.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Image-5-750-229x300.jpg 229w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Good business advice<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Alongside bad business advice goes good business advice. So let\u2019s start with the good news. Of the business owners we surveyed, 95% said they\u2019d received good business advice in the past. This was spread across a range of topics, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>admin and bookkeeping<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>making the most of taxable expenses<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>whether to focus on profit vs revenue<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>investing in training<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>growth and expansion<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>productivity<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>maintaining a good work\/life balance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Although only marginally, female business owners were more likely to have received good business advice (95.6%), compared to their male counterparts (94%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The most common positive impacts of good business advice cited were:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>ranging levels of financial gain to the business (67.5%)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>being able to grow the business (27%)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>working more efficiently (22.8%)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>gaining new clients or work (19.1%)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>achieving a better work\/life balance (17.3%).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Some business owners said they were also better able to retain existing clients or work (15.2%), and 8.2% were able to become more tax efficient.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"750\" height=\"954\" src=\"https:\/\/www.policybee.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Image-1-750-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-22539\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.policybee.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Image-1-750-1.jpg 750w, https:\/\/www.policybee.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Image-1-750-1-236x300.jpg 236w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Across those that reported some level of financial gain for the business, the average uptick equalled \u00a312,481.70, with almost 1 in 10 gaining more than \u00a325,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Industry and city breakdowns for good business advice<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A breakdown of the data revealed the Industries most likely to have received good business advice as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.policybee.co.uk\/accountants-insurance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">accountancy<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>banking and finance<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>charity and voluntary work<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.policybee.co.uk\/marketing-agency-insurance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">marketing<\/a>, advertising, and PR<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>public services and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.policybee.co.uk\/admin-insurance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">administration<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>recruitment and HR<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>sales<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>science and pharmaceuticals<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>teacher training and education.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Industries least likely to have received good business advice include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>social care<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>media and internet<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>law<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>leisure<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.policybee.co.uk\/personal-trainer-insurance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sport<\/a>, and tourism<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>environment and agriculture.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Business owners based in Birmingham, Bristol, Edinburgh, Glasgow, and Norwich were most likely to have received good business advice in the past. At the other end of the scale, the locations least likely to have received good business advice included Cardiff, Liverpool, and Newcastle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bad business advice<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Now for the other side of the story. Of the business owners surveyed, 62% reported receiving bad business advice in the past. The bad advice covered a range of topics, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>finances and investments<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>admin and bookkeeping<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>contracts<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>tax<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>hiring personnel.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Interestingly, male business owners were more likely to have received bad business advice (67%), compared to their female counterparts (55.3%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The most commonly cited negative impacts of bad business advice included:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>ranging levels of financial loss to the business (42.7%)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>personal stress (29.1%)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>losing existing clients (7.7%).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>From a business perspective, some had an insurance claim made against them by a customer or client (6.8%), and some had to halt either recruitment (5%) or expansion plans (3.9%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From a personal standpoint, 5% saw a loss of personal possessions, and 2.1% even lost their homes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"750\" height=\"1178\" src=\"https:\/\/www.policybee.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Image-2-750.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-22535\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.policybee.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Image-2-750.jpg 750w, https:\/\/www.policybee.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Image-2-750-191x300.jpg 191w, https:\/\/www.policybee.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Image-2-750-652x1024.jpg 652w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Across those that cited some level of financial loss for the business, the research reveals that bad business advice cost an average of \u00a39,225.00, with 1 in 20 losing more than \u00a325,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Accounting for 95% of all businesses, there were 5.3 million microbusinesses (0-9 employees) in the UK in 2021. Using our finding that 62% had received bad business advice in the past, this equates to a potential 3 million (3,286,000) microbusinesses. Assuming, based on our research, that 42.7% saw a negative financial impact, bad business advice has cost the UK\u2019s microbusinesses an estimated \u00a312.9bn (\u00a312,943,800,450).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Industry and city breakdowns for bad business advice<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Industries most likely to have received bad business advice include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>media and internet<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>social care<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>healthcare<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>accountancy, banking, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.policybee.co.uk\/financial-reporting-insurance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">finance<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Industries least likely to have received bad business advice include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.policybee.co.uk\/charity-insurance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">charity<\/a> and voluntary work<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>marketing, advertising and PR<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>creative arts and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.policybee.co.uk\/designers-insurance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">design<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.policybee.co.uk\/energy-assessor-insurance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">energy<\/a> and utilities<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>transport and logistics.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>When it came to which industries were most likely to see financial losses as a direct negative impact of receiving bad business advice, those most affected were:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>marketing, advertising and PR<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>accountancy, banking, and finance<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.policybee.co.uk\/teachers-insurance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">teacher<\/a> training and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.policybee.co.uk\/education-consultant-insurance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">education<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>However, transport and logistics saw the biggest financial impact from bad business advice in actual figures, with an average loss of \u00a316,450.35.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The top five based on actual financial losses also included energy and utilities (\u00a316,214.79), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.policybee.co.uk\/it-contractor-insurance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">information technology<\/a> (\u00a314,715.65), hospitality and events management (\u00a312,675.25) and social care (\u00a311.750.50).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Teacher training and education (\u00a311,541.04), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.policybee.co.uk\/engineers-insurance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">engineering<\/a> and manufacturing (\u00a310,856.29), and healthcare (\u00a310,535.50) also saw bigger financial impacts than the average UK business (\u00a39,225.00).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"750\" height=\"1476\" src=\"https:\/\/www.policybee.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Image-3-750-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-22541\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.policybee.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Image-3-750-1.jpg 750w, https:\/\/www.policybee.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Image-3-750-1-152x300.jpg 152w, https:\/\/www.policybee.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Image-3-750-1-520x1024.jpg 520w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Further down the order, in the middle of the pack, sit business consulting and management (\u00a39,148.97); creative arts and design (\u00a38,805.15); property and construction (\u00a38,250.96); charity and voluntary work (\u00a38,000.50); public services and administration (\u00a37,600.50); <a href=\"https:\/\/www.policybee.co.uk\/environmental-consulting-insurance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">environment<\/a> and agriculture (\u00a37,333.83); retail (\u00a36,802.97); media and internet (\u00a36,500.50); leisure, sport, and tourism (\u00a36,000.50); <a href=\"https:\/\/www.policybee.co.uk\/recruitment-agency-insurance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recruitment<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.policybee.co.uk\/hr-consultants-insurance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">HR<\/a> (\u00a36,000.50); and accountancy, banking and finance (\u00a35,745.62).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The industries with the smallest financial impacts included science and pharmaceuticals (\u00a33,500.50); law (\u00a34,333.83); marketing, advertising, and PR (\u00a34,335.50); sales (\u00a34,750.50); and law enforcement (\u00a35,667.17).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Looking at city-level locations, business owners based in Sheffield were most likely to have received some form of bad business advice in the past (84.6%), followed by Birmingham (75.8%) and Norwich (71.4%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"750\" height=\"1716\" src=\"https:\/\/www.policybee.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Image-4-750-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-22540\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.policybee.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Image-4-750-1.jpg 750w, https:\/\/www.policybee.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Image-4-750-1-131x300.jpg 131w, https:\/\/www.policybee.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Image-4-750-1-448x1024.jpg 448w, https:\/\/www.policybee.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Image-4-750-1-671x1536.jpg 671w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Next in the ranking came Liverpool (69.6%); Bristol (66.7%); Southampton (62.5%); London (62.3%); Nottingham (58.8%); Glasgow (58.3%); Belfast (58.3%); Newcastle (56.5%); and Leeds (56.4%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The locations least likely to receive bad business advice included Edinburgh (50%), Cardiff (52.2%), and Manchester (54.3%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Risky business<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Bad advice can make businesses more vulnerable.
