The traditional high street salons are having to adapt to keep up with the fast-changing trends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So here&#8217;s an overview of the latest hair and beauty industry statistics for the UK, as well as those of the last few years. We\u2019ve focused on salons as well as self-employed hairdressers and beauty therapists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All beauty industry statistics quoted are the most up-to-date available at the time of publishing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The UK hair and beauty industry at a glance<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>According to the National Hair &amp; Beauty Federation\u2019s (NHBF) most recent report, there were more than&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhbf.co.uk\/documents\/industry-statistics-2023-sheet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">61,000 hair and beauty businesses<\/a>&nbsp;operating in the UK in 2023.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The hair and beauty industry is largely represented by small businesses. Three-quarters of businesses employ fewer than five people, while 95% employ fewer than ten people.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>60.5% of people working in the beauty and hairdressing industry are self-employed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The number of people working in the hair and beauty industry declined by around 7%. The number of people taking up apprenticeships also declined.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Over 86% of people working in hairdressing, barbering, and beauty are female.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The UK hair and beauty market in 2025<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The personal care and beauty industry as a whole grew its contribution to the UK economy by <a href=\"https:\/\/britishbeautycouncil.com\/value-of-beauty-report-third-edition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">11% in 2023<\/a>, and is set to continue on an upwards trajectory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The hair and beauty treatment market size in the UK is now&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ibisworld.com\/united-kingdom\/industry\/hairdressing-beauty-treatment\/4900\/#TopQuestionsAnswered\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u00a35.8 billion<\/a>. It makes up a considerable chunk of the sector\u2019s overall contribution which is <a href=\"https:\/\/hji.co.uk\/hair-and-beauty-services-sector-contributed-ps85bn-to-the-uk-economy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u00a38.5 billion<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The large majority of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/467845\/uk-enterprises-of-beauty-treatment-facilities-by-turnover\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hair and beauty businesses turnover<\/a> less than \u00a3100,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In its&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhbf.co.uk\/about-the-nhbf\/industry-statistics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">September 2024 industry survey<\/a>, the NHBF found that 46% of salons and barbers surveyed made a profit. 41% broke even.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Clients certainly don\u2019t seem afraid to spend money. Women who visit salons regularly spend, on average, a staggering&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/professionalbeauty.co.uk\/site\/newsdetails\/how-much-women-spend-on-hair-and-beauty-treatments\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u00a31,000 a month<\/a>&nbsp;on hair, nails, beauty, and aesthetic treatments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the fourth quarter of 2023 alone, consumers spent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/475902\/consumer-spending-on-hair-dressers-united-kingdom-uk-quarterly\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u00a32 billion<\/a> in hairdressers and personal grooming salons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>UK hair and beauty salon statistics<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ibisworld.com\/united-kingdom\/industry\/hairdressing-beauty-treatment\/4900\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Independent beauticians and hairdressers are on the rise<\/a>, putting more pressure on the traditional salon industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The hair salon industry in particular is struggling and salon numbers on the high street are declining. In 2021, there were <a href=\"https:\/\/professionalbeauty.co.uk\/site\/newsdetails\/uk-beauty-salons-grown-25\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">17,505<\/a> hairdressers in the UK. Barbers continue to do well though, as the demand for male grooming services grows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the number of new <a href=\"https:\/\/britishbeautycouncil.com\/local-data-company-sept-2023\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">beauty salons and nail salons were still increasing<\/a>, as of 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The beauty salon industry, although growing, <a href=\"https:\/\/mimx.co.uk\/struggles-of-uk-based-beauty-salons\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">faces a lot challenges<\/a>. Like regulatory changes, rising costs, staff shortages, and changes in consumer behaviour. In 2021, there were 10,675 beauty salons in the UK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The NHBF reported that rises in wage costs were listed as the biggest concern for salons, which is resulting in higher treatment costs for customers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>London, Birmingham, and Glasgow are considered the <a href=\"https:\/\/kbpro.com\/insider\/the-uk-beauty-career-index\/?srsltid=AfmBOoqhUdLyQ3DHDOMDViBE4N7iMBRiKGScvDcQspeW1n8FQaEemUNB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">top beauty spots in the UK<\/a>, with highest number of hair and beauty salons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Hair and beauty industry demographics<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The British Beauty Council\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/britishbeautycouncil.com\/value-of-beauty-2023-smes-highstreet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2023 Value of Beauty Report<\/a>&nbsp;shows that the beauty industry accounts for 1 in 50 jobs in the UK. They also found that growth in the industry was not just city-based. Equal opportunities were found in rural areas, as well as in deprived areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Around <a href=\"https:\/\/hji.co.uk\/hair-and-beauty-services-sector-contributed-ps85bn-to-the-uk-economy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">224,000<\/a> people work in the hair and beauty services industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ons.gov.uk\/businessindustryandtrade\/business\/activitysizeandlocation\/adhocs\/1331thebeautyindustry\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Office for National Statistics<\/a>, there were 53,435 beauty and hairdressing businesses operating in the UK in March 2022. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The geographical breakdown went like this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>North East \u2013 2,215<br>North West \u2013 6,400<br>Yorkshire and the Humber \u2013 4,190<br>East Midlands \u2013 3,435<br>West Midlands \u2013 4,485<br>East \u2013 4,595<br>London \u2013 9,905<br>South East \u2013 6,550<br>South West \u2013 3,615<br>Wales \u2013 2,335<br>Scotland \u2013 4,105<br>Northern Ireland \u2013 1,605.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Hairdresser industry statistics<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2024, there were around <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/780175\/individuals-employed-in-hairdressers-services-in-uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">121,500<\/a> hairdressers and barbers working in the UK. The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhbf.co.uk\/about-the-nhbf\/what-we-do\/industry-research\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NHBF reported<\/a>&nbsp;that 60.5% of people working in hairdressing and barbering in 2023 were self-employed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The average hourly salary for hairdressers in the UK is \u00a313.30 (\u00a325,935 annually), according to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/uk.talent.com\/salary?job=hairdresser#:~:text=Type%20in%20a%20job%20title,%C2%A340%2C000\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">talent.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The number or hair salons on the high street is declining, with <a href=\"https:\/\/britishbeautycouncil.com\/local-data-company-sept-2023\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">414 salons<\/a> closing in the first half of 2023 alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trying to hire new hair stylists is becoming more difficult too. Interest in a career in the hairdressing industry amongst younger generations is dwindling, with only <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2024\/oct\/12\/england-hairdressers-salons-recruitment-crisis-gen-z-shuns-profession\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">4,160<\/a> people enrolling in an apprenticeship in England in 2023 (down from 13,180 in 2015).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Hair and beauty insurance (for when things get ugly<\/strong>)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Anyone running their own hair or beauty business needs to think about getting the right insurance protection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If things go wrong when providing a treatment, a client could make a claim against your business for negligence or accidental bodily injury.
