People have less money to spend on hair and beauty treatments,&nbsp;leading&nbsp;to a drop in the industry\u2019s value&nbsp;and their contribution to the UK job market.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Business owners have faced other economic problems: rising wages,\u00a0higher national insurance contributions, increasing business rates,\u00a0and utility costs.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These problems&nbsp;aren\u2019t&nbsp;unique to the hair and beauty industry.&nbsp;But,&nbsp;they do paint a picture of a resilient and historically strong post-pandemic&nbsp;business model starting to struggle&nbsp;under the weight of worldwide economic strains.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite all this, the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/britishbeautycouncil.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">British Beauty Council<\/a>&nbsp;is optimistic.&nbsp;They\u2019re&nbsp;projecting growth in 2026&nbsp;and for&nbsp;the industry to remain an important part of the UK economy.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With all that said,&nbsp;here\u2019s&nbsp;an overview of the latest&nbsp;hair and beauty industry statistics for the UK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All beauty statistics quoted are the most up-to-date available at the time of publishing.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Insurance for hair and beauty therapists is one way of protecting your business&nbsp;against economic uncertainty.&nbsp;Take a look&nbsp;at how we can support you with&nbsp;<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.policybee.co.uk\/beauty-therapist-insurance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>advice and guidance on what you need.<\/em><\/a><em><\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The UK hair and beauty industry at a glance<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>According to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), there were&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ons.gov.uk\/businessindustryandtrade\/business\/activitysizeandlocation\/adhocs\/3091hairdressingandbeautysalons2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">50,400 hairdressing and beauty salons<\/a>&nbsp;operating&nbsp;in the UK in 2025.&nbsp;It\u2019s&nbsp;important to note this&nbsp;doesn\u2019t&nbsp;include&nbsp;sole traders.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The hair and beauty industry is&nbsp;largely represented&nbsp;by small businesses.&nbsp;The National Hair &amp; Beauty Federation (NHBF)&nbsp;reported in 2024 that&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhbf.co.uk\/about-the-nhbf\/campaigning-for-you\/industry-research-reports-and-statistics\/nhbf-industry-statistics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">80%&nbsp;of businesses employ fewer than five people, while 95% employ fewer than ten people<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>58%&nbsp;of people working in the beauty and hairdressing industry are self-employed.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In 2025,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/britishbeautycouncil.com\/reports\/value-of-beauty-2026\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">total employment in the industry fell by 2.8%<\/a>, with direct employment falling by 2.1%.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Over 80% of the beauty industry&nbsp;workforce&nbsp;is female, with&nbsp;85%&nbsp;of beauty businesses being female-owned.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The UK hair and beauty market in 202<\/strong>6<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The UK beauty and&nbsp;personal&nbsp;care&nbsp;industry contributed&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/britishbeautycouncil.com\/reports\/value-of-beauty-2026\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a328.3&nbsp;billion&nbsp;to the UK economy in 2025<\/a>.&nbsp;This was a drop of 0.2% compared to 2024.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Looking at hairdressing and beauty therapy closer, they contributed \u00a35.7&nbsp;billion of this figure.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Around two-thirds of&nbsp;PAYE-registered hairdressing and beauty businesses&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/467845\/uk-enterprises-of-beauty-treatment-facilities-by-turnover\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">had a turnover of less than \u00a3100,000&nbsp;in 2025<\/a>.&nbsp;Only&nbsp;170&nbsp;made over \u00a31 million.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This ties in with an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhbf.co.uk\/about-the-nhbf\/campaigning-for-you\/industry-research-reports-and-statistics\/nhbf-state-of-the-industry-surveys\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">April 2025 survey by the NHBF<\/a>.&nbsp;40% of surveyed hair and beauty businesses said they were making a profit. 39%&nbsp;said they were breaking even, and 21% were making a loss.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Turning to consumer spending,\u00a0a Statista report reported that in the fourth quarter of 2023,\u00a0consumers\u00a0in the UK\u00a0spent\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/475902\/consumer-spending-on-hair-dressers-united-kingdom-uk-quarterly\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a32 billion<\/a>\u202fin hairdressers and personal grooming salons.\u00a0A\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/290121\/expenditure-on-hairdressing-beauty-salons-in-the-united-kingdom-uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2025 report<\/a>\u00a0confirmed that year-on-year spending has increased from this 2023 figure.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>UK hair and beauty salon statistics<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/whito.co.uk\/research\/beauty-salon-industry-data-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Over 1,000 new beauty salons and nail bars opened in 2024<\/a>, showing a faster growth rate than traditional hairdressers. That could suggest consumers are looking to have more services under one roof, rather than having to go to&nbsp;different places.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite encouraging growth numbers,&nbsp;beauty salons are also struggling with recent cost pressures. 72% said they planned to raise prices in 2026, 47% have paused hiring plans, and 26% have had to cut staff hours.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They\u2019re&nbsp;also struggling with thinning profit margins, averaging at around 8.2%, and wage bills have&nbsp;increasing&nbsp;by 5.8%. Salons that&nbsp;can\u2019t&nbsp;adapt to these challenges might struggle to stay afloat.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Recruitment is also proving to be difficult. The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhbf.co.uk\/about-the-nhbf\/campaigning-for-you\/industry-research-reports-and-statistics\/nhbf-state-of-the-industry-surveys\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NHBF\u2019s autumn&nbsp;2025&nbsp;survey<\/a>&nbsp;found that 75% of respondents were finding it more challenging to find and keep skilled staff.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s&nbsp;not all doom and gloom, though. Social media is continuing to be a driving force behind business growth for beauty salons.&nbsp;Engagement rates on the platform for the beauty category are at 3.9%,&nbsp;compared to the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/sproutsocial.com\/insights\/instagram-engagement-rate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">average of around 0.5%<\/a>.&nbsp;Whito highlighted in their report that good video content on Instagram is proving to be one of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/whito.co.uk\/research\/beauty-salon-industry-data-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">strongest ways for UK salons to convert followers to bookings<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Taking a closer look&nbsp;at&nbsp;the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ons.gov.uk\/businessindustryandtrade\/business\/activitysizeandlocation\/adhocs\/3091hairdressingandbeautysalons2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ONS\u2019s figures<\/a>, we can see the top three areas for&nbsp;registered&nbsp;hairdressing and beauty&nbsp;businesses&nbsp;are Birmingham (835), Glasgow&nbsp;(640), and Leeds (615).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Hair and beauty industry demographics<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The British Beauty Council\u2019s\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/britishbeautycouncil.com\/reports\/value-of-beauty-2026\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2026&nbsp;Value of Beauty Report<\/a>\u202fshows that&nbsp;the wider beauty and personal care industry supported more than 595,000 jobs in 2025.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Drilling down into the hair and beauty services industry, the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/britishbeautycouncil.com\/reports\/value-of-beauty-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">latest figures from 2024<\/a>&nbsp;put it at around 266,000 people. However, this has&nbsp;likely fallen&nbsp;since then, as highlighted by the British Beauty Council.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ons.gov.uk\/businessindustryandtrade\/business\/activitysizeandlocation\/adhocs\/3091hairdressingandbeautysalons2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Office for National Statistics<\/a>, there were 50,400&nbsp;beauty and hairdressing businesses&nbsp;operating&nbsp;in the UK in March 2025.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The geographical breakdown went like this:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">North East&nbsp;\u2013 2,150&nbsp;<br>North West \u2013&nbsp;5,950&nbsp;<br>Yorkshire and the Humber \u2013&nbsp;3,945&nbsp;<br>East Midlands \u2013 3,290&nbsp;<br>West Midlands \u2013 4,240&nbsp;<br>East \u2013 4,475&nbsp;<br>London \u2013 9,215&nbsp;<br>South East \u2013 6,310&nbsp;<br>South West \u2013 3,370&nbsp;<br>Wales \u2013 2,135&nbsp;<br>Scotland \u2013&nbsp;3,940&nbsp;<br>Northern Ireland \u2013 1,380<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Hairdresser industry statistics<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2024, there were around\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/780175\/individuals-employed-in-hairdressers-services-in-uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">121,500<\/a>\u202fhairdressers and barbers working in the UK. The\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhbf.co.uk\/about-the-nhbf\/campaigning-for-you\/industry-research-reports-and-statistics\/nhbf-state-of-the-industry-surveys\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NHBF reported<\/a>\u202fthat&nbsp;60.5% of people working in hairdressing and barbering in 2023 were self-employed.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The&nbsp;median gross annual pay&nbsp;for&nbsp;full-time&nbsp;hairdressers in the UK&nbsp;is&nbsp;\u00a324,279, according to\u202fthe&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ons.gov.uk\/surveys\/informationforbusinesses\/businesssurveys\/annualsurveyofhoursandearningsashe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ONS\u2019s Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings (ASHE)<\/a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The number or hair salons on the high street&nbsp;was declining in 2023, with\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/britishbeautycouncil.com\/reports\/value-of-beauty-report-2023\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">414 salons<\/a>\u202fclosing in the first half of&nbsp;the year alone. The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhbf.co.uk\/about-the-nhbf\/campaigning-for-you\/industry-research-reports-and-statistics\/nhbf-state-of-the-industry-surveys\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NHBF\u2019s April 2025 survey<\/a>&nbsp;found&nbsp;a decline in hairdressers and&nbsp;combined hair-and-beauty salons was still ongoing. However, they did state that&nbsp;the number of&nbsp;barbers,&nbsp;beauty salons, and nail bars was growing.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Hair and beauty insurance (for when things get ugly<\/strong>)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Anyone running their own hair or beauty business needs to think about getting the right insurance protection.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If things go wrong when providing a treatment, a client could make a claim against your business for negligence or accidental bodily injury.&nbsp;That\u2019s&nbsp;when you need treatment and public liability insurance.
