(That&#8217;s you, by the way.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And with the online fitness market growing by <a href=\"https:\/\/muscleandbrawn.com\/statistics\/personal-trainers\/#:~:text=After%20the%20pandemic%2C%2021%25%20of%20fitness%20trainers%20work,earn%206-figures%20or%20more%2C%2086%25%20offer%20online%20services\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">33% every year<\/a>, it\u2019s no wonder so many personal trainers are drawn to working virtually. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can build your business at your own pace, using pre-recorded videos and Zoom meetings to motivate your clients. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And because you&#8217;re not travelling to training sessions, or renting out gym space, you reduce some of your overheads. Like the cost of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.policybee.co.uk\/personal-trainer-insurance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">personal trainer insurance<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But wait&#8230;is that true? Do online personal trainers need insurance any more or less than their upfront-and-personal counterparts?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Do online personal trainers need insurance?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s tempting to think because you communicate with your clients virtually, your level of responsibility is reduced compared to other personal trainers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But regardless of whether you coach online or in-person, or do a bit of both (<a href=\"https:\/\/muscleandbrawn.com\/statistics\/personal-trainers\/#:~:text=After%20the%20pandemic%2C%2021%25%20of%20fitness%20trainers%20work,earn%206-figures%20or%20more%2C%2086%25%20offer%20online%20services\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">as 62% of PTs do<\/a>), the duty of care you have towards your client&#8217;s physical and mental well-being is pretty much the same. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s just the way you choose to deliver your services is slightly different. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;Ask yourself:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Is my client paying me?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Have they signed a contract?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Have they outlined their fitness goals?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Have they told me about pre-existing health conditions and injuries?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Am I tracking and reviewing their progress regularly?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Am I running remote exercise sessions?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Am I offering fitness, nutrition or wellness advice?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019ve answered \u2018yes\u2019 to any of the above, then you&#8217;ll need insurance the same way any other personal trainer would.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Though, admittedly, if <em>all<\/em> you do is online training, some risks <em>will<\/em> be reduced. We\u2019ll talk more about that later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>From blame to claim<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Back to your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.policybee.co.uk\/blog\/what-does-duty-of-care-mean\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">duty of care<\/a>, though. Loosely defined, it\u2019s your responsibility to not cause damage to others that could reasonably be foreseen or avoided.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In other words, if something goes wrong, either because of an accident or a mistake you\u2019ve made, you could be accused of malpractice and sued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Which is why <a href=\"https:\/\/www.policybee.co.uk\/medical-malpractice-insurance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">malpractice insurance<\/a> is so important. It covers allegations you\u2019ve inflicted physical or mental injury on someone, or caused them a financial loss, through your work. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A client that&#8217;s claiming you\u2019ve taught them the wrong technique, forcing them to put pressure on a pre-existing injury. Or that you&#8217;re responsible for them putting their back out after you told them to pick up a heavy weight during an online training session.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What other insurance do online PTs need?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Malpractice insurance is often sold under the banner of \u2018treatment and liability\u2019, which also includes public liability insurance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.policybee.co.uk\/public-liability-insurance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Public liability insurance<\/a> covers accidental property damage or bodily injuries caused by you. It\u2019s less useful if <em>all <\/em>you do is train online. But crucial if you work away from home or do something else on the side (like run fitness classes or boot camps).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A client knocking their veneers out after getting tangled up in your skipping rope, or you sloshing the contents of your water bottle over someone\u2019s phone, takes more than a simple \u201csorry\u201d to fix.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s also useful if you sell any products through your online PT business that might trigger a complaint. A slippy exercise mat, for example, or a protein bar that disagrees with someone\u2019s stomach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Either way, both malpractice and public liability insurance provide the legal muscle needed to defend you \u2013 and pick up the tab for any compensation if you\u2019re found liable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Top tech protection<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Now you\u2019ve covered your business activities, it\u2019s time to protect the very thing that makes your business tick. Your tech.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Without it, you can\u2019t run live-streamed sessions, set up Zoom meetings, or upload videos to your social media. In other words, you can\u2019t do your job properly. And it won\u2019t take long for your clients to cotton on and demand their money back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.policybee.co.uk\/portable-equipment-insurance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Portable equipment insurance<\/a> protects your phone, camera, laptop, speakers, kettlebells, and anything else you take out and about with you. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.policybee.co.uk\/business-contents-insurance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Studio insurance<\/a><strong> <\/strong>covers the furniture and fitness equipment you keep in your workout space. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both types of insurance cover items that would cost lots to repair or replace if they&#8217;re stolen or damaged by a fire or flood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Assuming your equipment\u2019s already covered by your home insurance policy won\u2019t cut the mustard, either. Even if your yoga studio happens to be one-half of your living room, it&#8217;s still your workspace. And so it needs protecting. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Offline personal trainer?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Last but not least, there&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.policybee.co.uk\/cyber-insurance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cyber insurance<\/a>. Because any amount of time spent offline could be damaging to your reputation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unfortunately, a cyber-attack or data breach takes time to fix. And though most clients are sympathetic, their patience can drain away quickly if they find out you&#8217;ve put their personal and financial data at risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cyber insurance will lend you the PR expertise needed to communicate cyber incidents to your clients, as well as the technical assistance needed to stop an attack, retrieve your data, and mend your systems. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most policies will also have the option to add on cover for financial cybercrime incidents.
