But for some, it\u2019s a brave new world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What\u2019s certain is that they want you to point them in the right direction. And do a fair bit of hand-holding, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What\u2019s also certain is that they want results. Offline or online, traditional or new, their marketing has to work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Mind the gap<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The traditional marketing model has changed for good, it seems. And your value lies in understanding the new.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Narrowing your clients\u2019 knowledge gap is also part of your job, but you need to tread carefully. A little knowledge is a dangerous thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Problem is, once you\u2019ve briefed your clients on their new strategy and they\u2019re more familiar with what\u2019s involved, you have the weight of their expectations to deal with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, explaining to your clients that your methods take time and that they won\u2019t see instant results helps. But it can sound like an excuse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Duck and cover<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The key lies in defining clear parameters and being realistic about results. Some preparation before you start work on your contracts and some gentle client management along the way can make all the difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Document exactly what\u2019s expected, by whom and when before you start. Keep and update a project timeline as you go. Having some well-defined, <a aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.policybee.co.uk\/blog\/why-you-need-terms-and-conditions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">signed terms and conditions<\/a> could prove invaluable, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And if we\u2019re talking self-preservation, then the first thing to ask yourself is: \u2018What\u2019s my liability? If I make a mistake, what could happen, and how much will it cost me to put right?\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Take a tip<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Risk management for marketing consultants doesn&#8217;t have to be complicated. If you identify every potential pitfall in a contract, it\u2019s straightforward enough to work back and consider which are the biggest areas of risk \u2013 and do something about them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It might seem obvious but as a starting point, try thinking about:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What am I being asked to do? And can I actually do it? (Be honest!)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What is my client expecting at the end? Can I deliver on time and to spec?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Will I control all or part of a budget? (Google spend, for example.)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Who owns the IP for what I&#8217;ll be working on?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Will I be handling any personal data? How do I keep my client&#8217;s info confidential?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Is part of the contract particularly specialist? If I\u2019m using a subcontractor to help me, do they have <a aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.policybee.co.uk\/blog\/what-is-professional-indemnity-insurance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">professional indemnity insurance<\/a>?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What <a aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.policybee.co.uk\/blog\/why-client-sign-off-matters\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sign-off<\/a> procedure, if any, is in place?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Risk aversion<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>What else?
