Start typing in the box and you'll see a list of business types and activities. Please pick the one that best matches yours.

It's important to get this bit right. If we don't have an accurate description of what your business does, there's a very good chance you won't be covered if you claim. For obvious reasons, the insurer can only cover the things it knows about and is comfortable with.

However, this isn't an exhaustive list. If you can't find a close enough match, or your business does more than one thing, please call us on 0345 561 0320.

We use this figure to calculate how much your insurance costs. It gives us an idea of the amount and value of work you do, and therefore how much to charge. We can't give you a quote without it, unfortunately.

We need your business's gross annual income excluding VAT. If you have one, your last financial year's figure is best.

If you've been trading for less than a year or you're just starting out, your best estimate is fine for now.

Any numbers you give us are strictly confidential.

This should be your organisation’s gross annual income from the last financial year.

If your charity or group is new, your best estimate for the first year is fine.

We need this to work out how much your insurance costs. If you don't have an exact figure, or you're just starting out, your best guess is fine. Any numbers you give us are absolutely confidential.
Full-time employees

For reference, the Health and Safety Executive considers all these 'employees':

  • unpaid volunteers and interns
  • work experience students
  • labour only subcontractors
  • temps
  • secondees
  • apprentices
  • helpers
  • staff borrowed from other companies

Note: even if someone is self-employed for tax purposes, they may be classed as an employee for other reasons. For example, if you use freelancers but you dictate where and when they work, and provide their equipment, you could be deemed liable for their welfare. Even though they're not, strictly speaking, employees you may still need employers’ liability insurance to cover them.

Include everyone who helps out in the course of a year and divide them into:

  • paid full-time or part-time employees
  • unpaid trustees and volunteers

The Health and Safety Executive considers all the following to be employees in terms of their welfare:

  • Apprentices
  • Freelancers, if you provide their equipment and dictate when and where they work
  • Interns
  • Labour-only subcontractors
  • Secondees
  • Staff borrowed from other companies
  • Temps
  • Trustees and directors
  • Volunteers
  • Work experience students

This should be the total, gross, annual amount the company pays to its permanent employees.

Exclude bonuses, dividends and commissions.

If you don't have an annual payroll, or if you're a new business and you're not sure what it'll be, please put '0'.

The insurer is looking for an idea of the size and scale of your work – large project values usually mean large bills if something goes wrong.

So, we need the total construction value of your largest project, not just the fee you were paid to work on that project.
