What your business kneads

When things are going smoothly, running a bakery business can feel like a piece of cake. Customers are smiling, goods are flying off the shelves…

But what if events take an unexpected turn? Someone chips a tooth on some aptly named rock cake. Or a fire breaks out in your kitchen.

In truth, it doesn’t take much for the cookie to crumble. Which makes protecting yourself with insurance for bakeries and cake shops essential.

It’ll cover your legal fees and compensation in a crisis, saving you from financial ruin. So when it comes to the business of baking, you can have your cake and eat it too.

Who needs bakery insurance?

Doesn’t matter if you’re a dab hand at decorating wedding cakes or if bread is more your bag. If you run your bakery business from commercial premises (like a shop or kitchen), this bakery insurance is for you.

It covers:

  • Bakery shops
  • Cake bakers and decorators
  • Cake, cupcake, and donut shops
  • Catering businesses
  • Commercial kitchens
  • Dessert emporiums
  • Patisseries
  • Sandwich shops, pie shops, etc
  • Wedding bakers

Please note, this insurance isn’t suitable for home-based bakers, or mobile bakers selling from a trailer, van, or food cart.

What type of insurance does a bakery need?

Every good batch of bakery insurance needs four essential ingredients: cover for your customers, your staff, your premises, and your equipment.

Public and product liability insurance covers your liability for slips, trips, spills, or accidents both inside your bakery and whilst out on deliveries – including damage or injuries caused by your products. If a customer claims against your business, it picks up the tab for your legal fees and compensation.

Next, employers’ liability insurance. It’s legally required if you employ people who work for you (even occasionally). It compensates them if they get sick or injured while working for you.

Stock and contents cover protects the things your bakery business can’t do without. If your ingredients get stolen or a water leak puts an untimely end to your electric ovens, you can count on them being replaced pronto. It includes your fixtures, fittings, furniture, equipment, and any stock that’s stored on or off your premises.

Last but not least, commercial property insurance is the icing on the bakers’ insurance cake. It pays to repair or rebuild your bakery if a surprise event like a fire, flood, or storm puts it temporarily out of bounds.

How much is insurance for a bakery?

You can count on a business broker (like us) to help find you a sweet deal on the cost of bakery insurance. Although it’s hard to say exactly how much it’ll cost until we know a bit more about you. Like:

  • Where your bakery is located
  • Your footfall
  • How much stock you have (and where you keep it)
  • How many people you employ
  • Your annual turnover.

Of course, the more bakery insurance you buy, the more you’ll pay. That said, you should never skimp on cover. Cutting corners will only cost you more time and money if it turns out your policy won’t cover your claim.

As always, the proof is in the pudding. Grab a quick online bakery insurance quote with us and you’ll see everything – including a full breakdown of your costs – in black and white, and with the option to tailor cover to your own tastes.

I run my baking business from home. Can I get insurance?

Home baking insurance is a smart idea for home-based bakers and cake decorators. That said, this bakery insurance is for bakers who run their business from commercial premises, and so won’t cover them.

Home bakers can get a quote on our online retailers’ page, however. It’s ideal if you do most of your trading through a website or social media account. It’ll also cover you for real-life occasional selling at food fairs, markets, and the like. Though not when carrying out door-to-door deliveries.

Why should I buy my insurance from you?

Because we’re professional insurance experts. We know exactly what you need to protect your business – even if you don’t.

We also know business insurance can be confusing and time-consuming to buy. So we cut out all the jargon and make sure you can get a policy quickly and easily.

We do all this while treating you like a person, not a number. Call centres and phone menus aren’t part of how we do things. So, if you ring our number, you’ll get through to a friendly adviser who can help.

Plus, we give you stuff: like an ‘I’m insured’ badge for your website, and money each time you successfully recommend us.

Still not convinced and need a second opinion? Then read what our thousands of customers have to say about us. At the end of the day, they’re the ones you should really listen to.
