Level the playing field

Your clients want to feel the burn.

But that’s all they want to feel. They certainly don’t want the fracture, strain or snap, too.

And claims are bad news. You’ll need to spend time and money fighting your corner, while running your business and protecting your reputation. That’s more mentally and physically demanding than you think.

Personal trainer insurance fights your corner. It gives you legal clout by paying for a solicitor to defend you and, if you’re found liable, picks up the tab for any compensation too. Our all-in-one policy covers you for bodily injury claims, as well as for professional negligence.

Why do I need insurance as a personal trainer?

Because even though you’re helping people improve their health, accidents can still happen. Especially when people are tired and might be pushing their limits. Even a small accident can lead to a claim, which can stop you in your tracks. And cost you a lot of money.

Let’s say you’re running a client through intensive circuit training. They might fall over a piece of equipment and injure themselves or damage their new smart watch. A claim could easily follow.

You face risks like these every day. Regardless of what kind of exercise program you’re using for a client. Personal trainer insurance helps by paying any compensation and legal fees you might face from a claim. And lets you focus on meeting your business’ goals. So your clients can meet theirs.

What activities does personal trainer insurance cover?

As a personal trainer, you have to adapt what you do to each client.

Sometimes, the best thing might be yoga and sports therapy. Other times, circuit training and group runs might be the way forward.

Personal trainer insurance covers a huge variety of these activities. But not all of them.

Here’s some examples of what’s covered:

  • Aerobics
  • Sports therapy
  • Yoga
  • Personal training
  • Boxercise
  • Circuit training
  • Group sessions
  • Bootcamps
  • Dancing

And here are a few things that aren’t covered:

  • Contact sports
  • Gymnastics and acrobatics
  • Horse riding
  • Powerlifting
  • Water sports
  • Aerial exercise, like trampolining
  • Endurance sports, like Tough Mudder
  • Roller skating, skateboarding, and similar activities
  • Any activities involving a weapon

What insurance do personal trainers need?

Being a personal trainer means helping your clients achieve their fitness goals. Whether it’s from your own gym, a rented space, or a park.

Managing all your clients can be difficult, though. Especially if you’re running your business by yourself. Personal training insurance helps you keep track of things you might miss. And softens the blow of a claim.

Here’s what you’ll need to get started:

  • Public liability insurance for personal trainers covers accidental injury or property damage that is found to be your fault. It covers you whether you’re at your own studio or renting a space. And covers your legal expenses and any compensation.
  • Malpractice insurance protects you against claims of negligence in your work, like offering a client the wrong training plan. Or having them do an exercise that isn’t suitable for them. It covers your legal fees and any compensation you might owe.
  • Equipment insurance is perfect if you rent a space and take anything with you to do your job. This might be portable fitness equipment, speakers, a laptop, a mobile phone, and anything else that you take out and about with you. It’ll pay to repair or replace broken or stolen equipment.
  • Studio insurance is for personal trainers that work out of their own gym. It covers your tech, furniture, and equipment in your gym or workout space if they’re stolen or damaged.
  • Employers’ liability is a legal requirement if you have any employees. It protects you if a staff member is injured or falls ill by working for you. You need it even if you have part-time employees, people on work experience, or anyone else working for you.

What does public liability insurance for personal trainers cover?

Public liability insurance is vital for personal trainers. It covers you for claims of accidental injury and property damage.

You might have accidentally left out some weights near the door of your gym, which a client trips over. Or you could drop a weight on their phone when you’re demonstrating an exercise.

Claims like these would be covered by public liability. With the nature of the work you do, these kinds of risks are common. Public liability makes sure that your ability to do business isn’t affected by them.

How much does personal trainer insurance cost?

How much you’ll pay will depend on a few things.

First, if you have employees working for you, your insurance will cost more. This is because you’re required by law to have employers’ liability insurance.

The cost will also vary depending on how many clients you have. The kind of activities you do can affect the price too.

You also need to be certain you have enough cover for your portable equipment.

To choose the right level of cover for your equipment, add up everything you use to run your sessions, from laptops and mobile phones to fitness equipment and speakers. Make sure you include it all, or you’ll be underinsured, which can leave you out of pocket.

Remember that your equipment isn’t covered unless it’s locked away or with you. Anything out of sight isn’t covered, so take extra care with it.

Do online PTs need insurance?

The short answer is: yes. But online personal trainer insurance will be different when compared to a PT who does sessions in person.

If you do all your sessions from one location, then you wouldn’t need portable equipment insurance.

You might not need employers’ liability insurance. It’s a legal requirement if you employ anybody. Even if they’re part-time, completing work experience for you, or doing unpaid training.

You definitely still need malpractice and public liability insurance, though. You’re still offering advice to clients, giving them training plans, or guiding them through sessions. So you could still be hit by claims of negligence or error. Especially if your sessions are one-on-one.

Studio insurance can also be handy for online PTs, as you’re still running your business from a space you own.

In short, PT insurance is always useful, even if your focus is on online sessions.
