Let’s get to the point

Ever thought about what might happen if you upset your customer’s Qi?

What if a client claims that your acupuncture sessions have caused an infection? Or you spill coffee on their brand-new cream sofa? (Designer of course…)

If you find yourself in a situation like this, it could cost you. Not only your hard-earned cash, but your reputation too. Even if the claims are untrue, it could still create negative energy.

You might have healing qualities, but that won’t help if a claim is brought against you.

Acupuncturist insurance is there to cover you for all eventualities, leaving you to focus on the positives.

Who needs acupuncturist insurance?

Any freelance therapists or businesses offering acupuncture, regardless of style, will need some insurance.

Types of acupuncture we cover include:

  • Japanese acupuncture
  • Traditional Chinese acupuncture
  • Korean acupuncture
  • Auricular acupuncture
  • Laser acupuncture
  • Acupressure
  • Scalp acupuncture
  • Dry cupping therapy

…and many more.

If you provide other complementary therapies, such as reflexology, reiki or massage, be sure to let us know. We’ll cover you for those too.

What acupuncturist insurance do you need?

Treatment and public liability insurance is the one you really need. It protects you against two types of claims:

  • Treatment/malpractice. Covers you if a client claims they’ve become ill, injured or mentally unwell as a direct consequence of your treatment.
  • Public and product liability. For those unfortunate mishaps. Say a client trips over a trailing wire in your clinic, then falls and breaks their wrist. It'll cover legal costs and pay any compensation due too. It also covers any injury or damage that arise from products you sell or use.

If you work from a clinic, whether it’s in your back garden or on the high street, you might want to consider studio insurance to protect all your kit. You could add on business interruption too.

And if you employ anyone, even part time, you’ll need employers’ liability insurance. It’s a legal requirement and can cost you £££s in fines from the Health & Safety Executive if you don’t comply. So not one to skimp on.

What does acupuncture insurance cover me for?

Say a client has a nasty skin reaction after a session with you. Or doesn’t feel any better after months of treatment. And they make a claim against you. Legal representation, court fees, compensation… costs could be sky-high, even if it’s not your fault.

Or a client falls down some badly-lit steps at your clinic and suffers an injury. You trip on the rug at your client’s house and knock over a sacred heirloom.

That’s where treatment and public liability insurance comes in. It covers all your legal costs and pays any compensation you owe.

Clinic insurance pays to repair or replace fixtures, fittings, and equipment. Maybe your new deluxe therapy couch is damaged by a flood. Or a wayward elbow knocks your glass of water and puts your iPad out of action.

Business interruption insurance will cover any lost income or temporary relocation costs if your clinic becomes unusable. If there’s a fire, or a tree falls on the roof for example.

How much does insurance for acupuncturists cost?

That depends on your business and the particular risks you face. How many clients you treat, what type of acupuncture you do, if you have your own premises.

When it comes to insurance, it’s better to be overly cautious than underprepared. So think about the risks you face, the worst thing that could happen, and how much it would cost to put right. Then buy as much cover as you can afford.
