Celebrating the unsung heroes of the charity sector

17/06/2019

Small Charity Week 2019 runs from 17-22 June

Say the word ‘charity’ and it’s often the big players that come to mind first. But did you know that small charities make up 82% of the charity sector?

They’re active right across the spectrum of society and make an invaluable contribution to individuals and communities, both in the UK and globally.

But according to the latest Civil Society Almanac, small charities receive just 16% of their funding from government and rely largely on individual donations.  That’s why we think celebrating small charities and raising awareness of the vital work they do is so important.

Helping hand

For many small charities, accessing the resources and professional advice they need can be a minefield.  It’s time-consuming and can be a drain on their already limited finances.

This is a bugbear of ours. And it’s why we developed insurance that’s specially tailored for small charities and groups. It’s also why we launched our Charity & Community Help Hub to signpost people to trusted sources of information.

We happily champion the cause of small charities year round, but during the week of 17 to 22 June we raise our game a little higher as part of Small Charity Week.

Organised by the Foundation for Social Improvement (FSI), Small Charity Week does a fantastic job of raising awareness of the essential work the UK’s small charity sector does across the board.

The glue of society

Helping to launch Small Charity Week 2019 at the House of Lords, former Home Secretary and FSI supporter Lord David Blunkett, remarked: ‘During these politically uncertain times, small charities are the glue that holds society together.’

We wholeheartedly agree. And it’s one of the reasons we support Small Charity Week as a partner organisation.

Each day of the Week is themed, with specific events, workshops and advice sessions taking place around the country – providing small charities with access to expert knowledge and advice on topics such as marketing, HR, finance, governance and IT.

For many, events like these can be a lifeline. They can also kick-start knowledge sharing relationships that can have a huge impact both on individual small charities and the people they help.

Small Charity Big Impact Day

This year, we’re the sponsor of Small Charity Big Impact Day on Friday 21 June. This is the day on which the winners of the FSI Small Charity Big Impact Awards are announced, which we’re also sponsoring.

According to Pauline Broomhead CBE, founding CEO of the FSI: ‘Small charities come up with the solutions for today’s societal problems.’  The FSI Awards showcase the important work they do.

On Friday we’ll be celebrating the success of the winners in each of the five categories, as well as five runners up and five highly commended charities and community groups.

The awards ceremony will take place in July in London and we're looking forward to presenting the winners with their awards.

We want to take this opportunity to wish all the entrants the very best of luck; you’re all winners in our eyes.
